After several, many, different iterations I have finally finished this damn project. It is wonderful how strict a critic you can be when you are creating your own identity. But this nitpicky nightmare is finally finished which means I can now whore out this baby to attract all of those clients buzzing about. Please, please go check out my work at justinkyle.net

Karibu and Ethiopia

Here is a project that not only served me on technical aspect, but oddly enough, a geographic aspect as well. I was asked by my DJ friend CTRL-Z to design a poster for the upcoming bash that would be hosted by his parent's Ethiopian restaurant. I decided to make a letter jumble within the outline of the country's borders, and demarcate the various band names with the country's national colors. Needless to say, it was very puzzling when after searching I came up with two very distinct definitions of the nation's border.
This is when I asked the client about this discrepancy. He said that the two areas are separate but he has family from both states. So I should include both areas, the mainland Ethiopia and the Eritria. In typical architecture over-achieving fashion, I designed the poster twice.

The border between Ethiopia and Eritrea has never been precisely demarcated. Between 1998 and 2000, the two countries fought a war over the issue, which involves quite small enclaves along the northern segment of their border, including the tiny village of Badme and the enclave of the Irob people. In 2002 an international boundary commission delimited the border. Although both nations agreed to accept its decision, Ethiopia has refused to accept the commission’s findings in full, much to the consternation of the Eritrean government. The central section of Ethiopia’s border with Somalia also has never been fully demarcated and is only provisional. Questions remain about the precise location of small parcels along the border with Sudan as well.~wikipedia

ART RAG cover

I completed this cover a while ago but have finally had time to post it. I was asked to design the cover for this flagship issue, and due to the time crunch, I came up with a composite of previous sketches. I definitely flexed my photoshop muscles and put a nice epilogue on this season of sketches. Also, this was the first time I have had something of mine published on this scale, very exciting to see your wok reproduced on semi-gloss. Check out the wallpapers I made below.

Dawn of the Dead Day

Another month, another Art Rag event. This one has a fashion show with a chic zombie theme. For the zombie movie impaired I am heavily channeling Mr. Romero and his past zombie movie posters, hopefully I am doing the master justice.

Film Festival 08

Another year, another film festival. The unlucky story of this poster is that the event it is advertising no longer exists. Apparently there were not enough submissions from local filmmakers, and therefore there are no films to fest over. I still really like this poster and again used the resources available over at google patents to complete it. I could damn near get lost on that site.

Lubbocklava

A flyer for a local event in Lubbock, TX. The prevalent DJ CTRL Z coaxed me into making this baybe and drive home the theme of east meets west. Apparently he wanted to focus on the Middle East themes and motifs. Only later after the flyer was printed did he correct me the incorrect use of turbans and food. I did Greek and Pakistani on accident. O well. Attached are the base sketches that I used to make the above, I will post more comparisons like this in the future so stay tuned.

Mucca Pazza!!!!

This band is so freakin intense. A 30+ marching band from Chicago, they parade across the states, bringing there eclectic style with them. I love how they all dress in uniform, but none of them are matching. If this does not excite you, then this link surely will.

Art Rag

I would link up to the embarrassing website I made for this magazine. But I think I will wait until I finish the design and also get more content. This poster just came to me yesterday morning, I did not have to struggle with it at all. You can tell the very obvious allusions towards mahfood's work. I justify this by "learning from the best". Hopefully my own poster making skills will branch off soon and be defined individually, as opposed to catering to another master's art style.

This is a drawing from the sketchbook of a farmer's market in downtown Austin. I love this yuppie hippie movement, where its suddenly hip to where hemp sandals and buy all-natural free range root beer.

This is a poster I had tons of fun working on. I try to bring together most of my work in the computer. I love the freedom gained by freehand sketching, but many of the effects that really bring out a drawing are available through tinkering in photoshop and illustrator. I am also super excited about this show. Check her out if you would like to share this excitement.

This was for an all local show in the hub city. The man pictured here came from the 1974 yearbook which is an awesome artifact I salvaged from one of the many thrift stores found here. This year in review featured an article on the state of the elderly. There is a beautiful black and white picture depicting an old man sitting despondently in a dark room. His hair is mussed, an embarrassment that makes this dreary scene even more depressing. Abandonment is depressing. Personally I plan to drink myself to death if it ever gets to this point. Whiskey makes the best medicine.

Believe it or not, this is a sketch of Picasso. I really wish I had more time for this one. I forced myself to make something while in an artistic slump. The results are decent, and I got to play with halftones. So I shouldn't complain.

KTXTThis one is an oldie but a damn goodie. These stupid monster characters have been stalking me ever since I made them. If I get bugged enuff I may make another batch. O, and if you are interested in what Miss Elkie Wiskerson and I submitted then check it.

Summer Recruitment

Ahhhh.....summer recruiting. It is that special time of year when the ranks of one of the smallest minorities on campus becomes even smaller. I got to stretch my Illustrator legs on this one and I am kind of proud of the results. I love making these things because the powers that be insist on including band names to attract the outcast music snob in all of us. The fun thing is that this music snob gets to pick all of the names. My itunes looks very similar to this list.

Here is my tribute to the noise rock kings themselves. If you have never "experienced" a Health show then you are sorely missing out on something quite special. It is like watching the feeling of taking a mixed cocktail of powerful narcotics without snorting, smoking or shooting a thing.

One of the first posters where I used a doodle I made while working at the most mind numbing jobs I have ever had. I know I shouldn't complain about a job where you sit in an air-conditioned box all day and get paid to memorize Digg. But jesus, I felt that my mind and body were both going into atrophy. The good thing is that the boredom drove me to doodle, and without that summer I would be far behind in my sketching skillz.

I have always wanted to work with Google Patents for something, and this time I did just that. I found some schematic on a piping system with hundreds of intricate parts, simplified it, and here you go. I love this illustration style, it is so honest in its expression of the patented objects. I want to meet the people that still draw these patents like 18th century woodprints on 10 dollar bills.
